In recognition of “ongoing commitment to ensure quality care is available for stroke patients in its area,” Valley Baptist Medical Center Harlingen was recently designated as a Comprehensive (Level I) Stroke Facility in Trauma Service Area-V by the Texas Department of State Health Services. The designation is for a two-year period ending September 1, 2018.

Emergency Service Partners, L.P. has provided emergency physician services at this South Texas facility since July 2015.

Betsy Gonzalez“The Comprehensive Stroke Certification means that our hospital is equipped to evaluate, stabilize and provide emergency care to all patients with acute stroke symptoms,” said ESP physician Dr. Betzaida González-Valentín, ED medical director in Harlingen. “In addition, we have the ability to admit our patients to a dedicated stroke unit. Patients in our community with large ischemic strokes or hemorrhagic strokes will benefit greatly from our dedicated services.”

González noted that Valley Baptist also has the capability to evaluate those with strokes from unusual etiologies or requiring specialized testing or therapies, and that the hospital is an educational resource center for other facilities and health care professionals in the region.

“We would like to thank the ESP family for their continued support and we look forward to providing the best medical care in the Rio Grande Valley,” she said. “As an ED medical director of a CSC, I and other ESP physicians continuously collaborate with our outstanding neuro/stroke team to deliver quality stroke care. We quickly evaluate and identify acute stroke patients that meets criteria for IV_tPA and intra-arterial revascularization treatments. Our recent biggest accomplishment includes a door-to-needle time of 9 minutes! We are also proud of also having a recanalization rate (AIS treatments with IV_tPA and IA) of 28% for 2015. We will certainly continue working to provide excellent care.”
