Chapa Publishes Ob/Gyn Article
Dr. Hector Chapa, an ESP ob/gyn hospitalist physician from CHI St. Joseph Health Regional Hospital in Bryan, TX, has published a Clinical Update in Ob.Gyn. News. Titled, “Improving Patient Care by Reducing Retained Sponges During Vaginal Deliveries,” the article addresses the benefits of assistance technology to reduce the rate of gossypiboma.
Chapa concludes that “data demonstrate that while counting surgical sponges is an important way to reduce the likelihood of leaving one in the surgical site, counting is probably not enough. By combining state-of-the art sensors and a detector that can find objects in a patient’s abdominal cavity or birthing canal, the Situate™ Delivery System can help reduce the incidence of gossypiboma, which is responsible for approximately 2000 cases of retained surgical items each year in the United States.”
