Allen Addresses Olympics Zika Concerns

Dr. Coburn Allen discusses Zika at the Summer OlympicsA number of big-name athletes announced in July that they would not be attending the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, citing concerns about the Zika virus that is thought to be particularly prevalent in South America.

KXAN-TV in Austin turned to ESP’s Dr. Coburn Allen, a pediatric emergency physician and infectious disease specialist at Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas, for perspective.

“If I had tickets to go to Brazil right now, I’d go in a heartbeat,” Allen said. “The estimates are that about one in a million travelers to Brazil are going to get infected with Zika virus. So, it’s very low. The odds are, honestly, I think equal to people living in the United States right now.”
