Iyer: Asthma Protocols Improve Pediatric Care

Children with asthma are getting faster and potentially less expensive care because of new coordination among several Texas children’s hospitals. Austin’s KXAN-TV spoke with Dr. Sujit Iyer, a pediatric emergency physician at Dell Children’s Medical Center, who explained how new, streamlined asthma protocols are improving care.

Asthma is “the number one reason for kids to be hospitalized,” Iyer said. “It’s the number one reason for kids to miss school and subsequently miss work.” He noted that both hospital and community pediatricians are employing new guidelines which, for example, now enable a child with complications from asthma to receive an inhaler or steroids earlier in the treatment process.
